  A fatal boiler accident occurred at the works of the Four-Mile-Flat Company, near Cockatoo, last Friday about noon. It seems that the water in the boiler was allowed to fall below the roof of the furnace, and that, although a large fire was on at the time, one of the employees turned cold water into the boiler, and thereby caused an explosion. The boiler was thrown some eight or ten feet from its bed, besides being rent almost from end to end; and the brickwork and masonry were also split by the force with which the explosion occurred. A good deal of damage was also done to the engine house. Four men were scalded by the rush of steam, two of whom were at once removed to the Maryborough Hospital. One of them named Harkom, who has since died, leaves a wife and four children to deplore his untimely end. The other men are progressing toward recovery. Late last evening we were informed that the man Erhardt, who caused the explosion had previously been told by the manager of the danger, but he paid no attention to the warning. An official inquiry is to be held into the incident.
  Erhardt, the culpable fireman, of the Four-Mile Flat Company, died in the Maryborough Hospital on Wednesday morning. Both he and Holcombe were dreadfully scalded by the explosion, and although promptly conveyed to the hospital and attended with the utmost assiduity by the hospital surgeons, they never rallied, but gradually sunk and died. Erhardt was buried yesterday. The funeral was attended by a large number of Germans, and presented a most imposing appearance. This sad accident has cast quite a gloom over Cockatoo and Mosquito, where the deceased were well known and generally respected.
