9 Jul 1855 - Inquest - Geelong Advertiser and Intelligencer -
-An inquest was held on Friday afternoon, at the Ashby Hotel, before Forster Shaw, Esq., Coroner, and a respectable jury, on the body of James Haddon, who had suddenly expired the previous night.
The following evidence was adduced :--Flora, wife of James Maddon, Brittannia-street, Ashby : I am three years married to deceased, during the last two years he has been in delicate health ; we have been shepherding on Mr Mitchel's station, near Chepstowe, during the last five months ; we left that place nearly four weeks ago; we were four days on the road, and lay by night under the dray, and deceased caught a heavy cold, he has been bad ever since; he did not apply for medical advice; he was every day in town, looking for a situation; he was incessantly coughing and spitting every night He was fifty-five years of age he kept his bed yesterday, as he had a severe bowel attack ; we went to bed about nine o'clock; shortly after he asked for a drink of cold water he took it, and turned over on his side, to sleep in about an hour I awoke, and said to him, James, I think you are easier; he did not answer me, but breathed very heavily; I then put my hand on his face, and fearing he was dead, I desired the boy to rise and get a light; I got up, ran to a neighbour's, and got some matches, but he was quite dead this was about twelve o'clock.
Archibald Haddon, son of deceased: My father, mother, and self; came down the country three weeks ago he has been in delicate health a good while he has had a cough and spitting; shortly after I went to bed mother called me up to get my father a drink of water ; I got up and gave it; my mother told him not to drink it all, as it mighit hurt him; in about an hour or more mother called me up again, saying that she thought he was dead; mother got matches and a light; I found father was dead. Sydney King-l was at the wharf this morning; when I came home at 8 o'clock, Mr Cross and deceased's wife asked, " Would I go up and lay a man out, that died during the night ? " I asked if any met was by when he died? Mrs Haddon said no, she had lighted a candle which went out, aid they went to sleep, and when she awoke she called to him, and put her hand to his face, he was quite cold, called to the boy to get a light, but there was no matches in the room; then I said, it was more than I dare do to lay him out, and that I would go and give notice at the Police Barracks, which I did; that is all that I know. The jury returned the following verdict, " That deceased died from consumption.,
