Somerset Notes:
Tax records show: James owned property that went to Jane, then Jane gave some of these lands to a son James/Jacob
When James/Jacob married Sarah GAWLER, one of the witnesses was a Joseph Cleal . Joseph also lived in the same town as James and Jane
From 1766 ( when the Land and Property tax records began in Broadway ) James owned two properties in Horton , Somerset . One called 'Goodwin's ' ( later known as Gooden's ) and 'Mather's' ( later known as Matthew's ) . Goodwin's was taxed for 0-2-9 1/4 and Mather's was taxed at 0-3-9 . James also had a property with a James Mico in 1781 and 1782 and between 1781 and 1785 he owned one other unnamed property in Horton, for which he paid 0-15-0 in taxes . He also had a property in Beer Crocombe , unnamed , which he had from 1782 ( tax was 0-4-7 1/3 ) . In 1789 this property passed to a Mrs. Cleal ( noted as Jane Cleal in the 1792 records ) who kept the property until 1805 , at which stage it was probably sold . This property in Beer Crocombe was occupied during this time by William Soulman
The two properties in Horton were still owned by James in the1780's when the records recommence and both properties passed on to Jane Cleal in 1789 . It is from this information that I believe James died in 1788
Jane took over all James's properties in around 1788 . By 1791 she also owned an additional property in Horton called 'Savidges' . She kept all the properties in Horton until 1811 , when both 'Gooden's' and 'Matthew's' became the property of Jacob Cleal . In 1814 Jane's property 'Savidges' is listed as the Late Jane Cleal's and it is occupied by a J. Matthews . From 1815-1827 these details remained the same . In 1828 the Late Jane Cleal is written as the Late John Cleal ( spelling mistake ? ) and it is occupied by a Sam Lock . From then until 1831 , when these records end , this property is listed as the Late John Cleal's
