Notes:
Robert grew up in Seymour and became a gentlemen's tailor by trade. He worked at the leading men's wear store in Collins St, Melbourne before he moved to Wangaratta and worked for Sloane's
Robert and Ina had two children before Robert signed up for service in World War 1. When Robert enlisted he gave his address as 46 Filson St. , Ascot Vale , which means that he was living with his In-Laws in Feb 1916
Robert served with the 24th Battalion, he enlisted on the 11.2.1816 and was shipped out on the 'Militiades' on the 1.8.1916 . Arriving in Plymouth, Eng ,on the 25.9.1916
Robert arrived in France , from Eng , on board the 'S.S. Onward'. Arriving in Etaples, France on the 20.11.1916. Within two weeks of his arrival in France , Robert contracted the mumps, which resulted in him becoming sterile
On the 3.3.1917 , Robert received a gun shot wound to the left pectoral region of his chest, this injury was severe and affected his arm for the rest of his life. He rejoined his Battalion but was once again wounded , on the 6.5.1917. This time he was buried alive in his fox hole , by a grenade . This resulted in him suffering from buried shell shock. Rumour has it that Robert's hair turned totally white after this incident. He was returned to his unit on the 9.6.1917. He was returned to Australia , on board the 'Carpentaria' and discharged on the 19.10.1918. At the end of the war Robert was entitled to the 1914/15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.(These three medals were handed out to anyone who served in the European theatre of this war)
His shoulder injury couldn't have been totally incapacitating, as family information has Robert shooting/hunting for most of his life. Apparently most of Robert's shoulder was missing, so he had to specially tailor his own jackets , so that they would 'sit' correctly
Robert was the Riverina clay pigeon shooting champion and he won a German twist seal gun for this event
Robert also had a contract with the Menzies hotel , in Melbourne , to supply them with quails for their dinner menus. He would shoot the quails with dust to knock them out , so he didn't bruise their flesh , which would have made them inedible
Robert bred and showed German short haired pointers , some of which won awards at the Melbourne Show
Ina Ashley Lyons was born at 'Ashley Cottage' 13 Marriott St., St. Kilda, in 1890.
When Ina married she gave her address as Filson St. , Ascot Vale, although she gave her usual address as just Seymour .
During Robert's military service , Ina moved around quite a bit changing residences five times. She started out at 46 Filson St, Ascot Vale, (her parents address). Then they all moved to 60 Buckley St, Essendon before Ina finally branched out on her own and moved to 'Crow hurst' , Finch St North, East Malvern. She then moved to 'Emoh Ruo', 17 Bon View Rd, Malvern and finally to 13 Bon View Rd, Malvern.
Ina may not have been the shy flower she appears to be in photos. I have long been told that Ina was quite the "flapper" when she was younger, and that trips to Melbourne to purchase cloth for the tailoring business, usually resulted in a round of frantic partying.
