Notes:
Robert was a farmer most of his adult, at first farming his father's land before acquiring some of his own. That is until his father's death in 1889 , when he inherited close to $2000, at which time , he began listing his occupation as a gentleman.
  Robert married Emily Barrett, the baker's daughter, on the 23.4.1881 , at the Christ Church , in Seymour. The witnesses were Frederick . W . Barrett ( Emily's brother ) and Jemima Thomson (Robert's younger sister ). The service was performed by William Frew , clergyman for the parish district of Seymour
Emily Barrett was born 1857 , in Brooklyn, New York, America. This was confirmed in the Barrett Family bible, which her mother Rosabella had given to one of her grandsons.
Emily migrated to Australia , at the age of one , with her parents and two brothers, on board the 'Reinhard'. Emily then spent her early life moving around Victoria with her parents before they eventually settled in Seymour.
  In Mar of 1875 Robert was sent to prison for three days during his fathers insolvency trial for "inconsistant and evasive answers" regarding his receipt of 112 pounds from his father. The following week he was taken back to court and admitted he had the whole sum in a box at his residence.

  Sometime between 1901 and 1908, the family moved to the suburb of Essendon, in Melbourne

• 17 Nov 1884 - SEYMOUR, Sunday
  A narrow escape from a serious accident occurred at the Seymour rifle butts yesterday. The two markers (Robert Butler and Gully) were engaged in adjusting the target, the former displaying the signal flag as required, when, through some unaccountable blunder, Constable O'Connell fired and struck the iron between them Butler was covered with whitewash off the target and Gully had a shower of broken lead thrown about him, but fortunately there was no further harm done. An inquiry will be held, as had the rules of the club been adhered to such a thing could not possibly have occurred.
   
• 24 Sep 1886:- Seymour Express and Goulburn Valley, Avenel, Graytown, Nagambie, Tallarook and Yea Advertiser:
  A few days ago Mr Robert Butler of this town was engaged cutting some grass in his paddock near the river, when a tigersnake attacked him with the ferocity of a bull-dog. Ho'no was how-ever too much for the reptile, and in about two seconds the latter was lying as dead as an Egyptian mummy.
   
• In 1894 , a Seymour newspaper printed an account of how at the end of the 1860's, a boy, named Jones was rescued from Whiteheads creek by his playmate Butler
  The boys had been playing on the banks of the creek, when a tomahawk was dropped into the creek by accident. The tomahawk, in a somewhat fossilised condition had just been discovered. In 1894 an old identity had claimed it was the identical weapon with which the Aboriginal, King Billy stalked kangaroos on the old Cemetery site, in the early days of Seymour
   
• 26 Feb 1908 - CURED HIS BACKACHE. -
  "I got a severe wetting one day and soon after I was troubled with pains in my back," said Mr. Robert Butler, the well known farmer, of Seymour, having lived in that town for fifty- three years; his home being there now in High Street. "I got very bad, indeed. I could only stoop Very, very slowly. I could hardly do my boots up, and it was an effort to get my clothes on. It was just as if a knife was going through my kdneys. Even when I was still I had a dull pain across the samll of my back— it was a crushed, sore sort of feeling. I could only get about slowly. I was very near giving up my work altogether. As it was I had to take a spell of rest every few minutes. I couldn't fancy iny food— I was always suffering such pain and discomfort. If I turned in bed it would catch me in the back with a terrible crick, and in the mornings I could hardly get up. I just had to drag about all day. At last my wife persuaded me to give Dr. Williams' Pink Pills a trial. The first box did me a little good, and from that on I started to mend.
  Dr Williams' Pink Pills made my back as supple as I could wish, and took away every, ache and pain. I have never had a return of the complaint since they cured me, though I've been exposed to all weathers."

• 21 Jun 1940: - MR. R. A. BUTLER
  The death has occurred of Mr. Robert Absalom Butler, 86, of Seymour. As the oldest living native of Seymour. Mr. Butler was chief guest at the recent Sey- mour centenary celebrations. In his early days Mr. Butler had many exciting experiences with blacks, and members of the Kelly gang. He is survived by a widow, one son (Mr. Robert Butler, of Barham. N.S.W.). and one daughter (Mrs. C. D. Page, of Blackburn).

  BUTLER. — On September 15, at her daughter's residence, Emily, wife of the late Robert, loving mother of Robert, Jane (Mrs. C. Page) and Eliza (deceased), loved nana of Lyonel, Lila, Ashley, Elva and Graham, and great-grandmother of Paul. At - rest.
