• Notes:
• According to their son William John's birth cert. in 1866 - John was 28 and Rebecca was 24. This was confirmed on their son Albert Victor's birth 1881 (John being noted as 45, Rebecca 42)
• John travelled to Australia , at about 18 years of age, landed in Tasmania , then two months later travelled to Melbourne. He became a storeman upon his arrival in Melbourne , a profession he continued for the rest of his life in Australia
• By 1864, John and Rebecca left the Melbourne area and moved to Emerald, Vic. In 1879 , they moved again to St. Kilda , where they stayed for the rest of their lives
• John was living in Nelson St. Kilda when he died. The house was called 'Elder Cottage' and it was owned outright by John
• According to his will John also owned three other houses. (Two houses in Nelson st, St. Kilda, one with five rooms and one with four rooms, that were rented out. And one house in Balston St. East St. Kilda of four rooms , that was also rented out but was vacant upon John's death.) Also included on the inventory were 20 chickens! John's estate totalled 781 pounds, 18 shillings, 6 pence. This estate was left , in it's entirety , to his wife Rebecca.
• Rebecca supposedly married at 16 years of age! Supposed to have married in Melbourne in 1859, but no record of this event seems to exist in official records. If the marriage did take place in 59, then Rebecca was closer to 21 than 16.
• Rebecca became a nurse sometime after Maria was born

Arrowsmith, however I think her second name indicates she is the base child of John Verner, the widower of Ellen's sister Emily).

• 6th May 1881:-
  At the Prahran Court on Thursday, Joseph MORAN, Patrick Campbell, and Henry Man- ning were brought in and charged with having on the 4th inst unlawfully assaulted a Chinaman named Wing Chang The prisoner Manning was also charged with having re- sisted the police in the execution of their duty It will be remembered that the pri- soners attacked the Chinaman on Wednes- day afternoon, near the Alma Hotel, Chapel street, and beat him most cruelly. They were arrested soon afterwards by Constable Shanahan and a Mr Jobbin, but Manning effected his escape Sergeant Parkinson obtained a warrant for his arrest, and about 10 o'clock the same night Constables O Connor and Shanahan found him m the bar of the Alma Hotel, with about a dozen other men, most of them being the worse for drink. It was not without much diffi- culty that the constables secured the pri- soner. From inquiries made it seems that these men had possession of the street for some time on Wednesday, and that pre- vious to assaulting Wing Chang another Chinese vegetable hawker had his truck upset, and a gentleman who was passing carrying a parcel in each hand had his hat knocked over his eyes. On the application of Sergeant Parkinson the prisoners were re- manded for a week
   
• 5th May 1881:-
  A brutal outrage was committed at St Kilda on Wednesday afternoon by three larri-kins on a Chinese vegetable hawker named Wing Chang. It appears that about 2 o clock he was near the Alma Hotel, Chapel-street, when he was set upon by the larrikins and most cruelly beaten, his face and head were cut, his nose broken, and he was left lying in the street covered with blood. A gentleman passing observed the Chinaman lying in the street, and called at the Prahran police sta-tion, and reported the matter to Sergeant Parkinson. Constable Thonahan was at once despatched to the spot, where he found the Chinaman lying as described. With the assistance of another gentleman the con- stable succeeded in arresting the three offenders, but one of them managed after- wards to get away. The constable removed the Chinaman and the two prisoners to the Prahran police station, where they gave the names of Joseph MORAN and Patrick Camp bell, and their ages as 22 and 21 years respec tively. On examining the prisoners it was found that their hands were covered with blood Sergeant Parkinson sent for Dr. Murray, and he dressed the Chinaman's wounds, which are of a rather serious nature.
   
• 1st Jun 1881:-
  On the night of the Queen's Birthday an outbreak of larrikinism took place in High Street, St Kilda. A number of youths who had congregated there commenced a horse- play sort of game with each other, and then proceeded to insult the passers by and to attack the neighbouring houses. They had smashed in one door when Sergeant Holmes arrived, and arrested Joseph MORAN, who ap- peared to be the most disorderly spirit in the gang. The others fled, and MORAN resisted desperately, assaulting the sergeant and kick- ing in the helmet of Constable Andrews, who had come to assist in the capture. Eventu- ally, after much struggling and swearing on the part of the prisoner, he was lodged in the watchhouse. Subsequently three of his comrades in guilt, named Henry Manning, Patrick Campbell, and William Dodd, were arrested on warrant. All four appeared before the local Bench yesterday, and the following sentences were passed upon them:- Moran, for insulting behaviour, £10 or three months' imprisonment with hard labour , for assault- ing Sergeant Holmes, three months' hard labour, for obscene language, £10 or three months; for assaulting Constable Andrews, three months, and for insulting behaviour to- wards Mr F. W. Allen, £10 or three months. Manning and Campbell were fined £10 or three months each, and Dodd 40s , or 14 days.
   
• 4th June 1881:
  ST. KILDA COURT. TUESDAY, MaY 31. Before the Mayor (Geo. Pilley, Esq.), Messrs. Finlay, Balderson, Hughes, Smith, and Quinlan, J.P.'s. RUFFIANLY Conduct.-Four young men named, respectively, Joseph MORAN, Henry Manning, Pat- rick Campbell, and William Dodds were charged- the three last named with insulting behaviour, and Moran with insulting behaviour, using obscene language, and assaulting Sergeant Holmes and Constable Andrews. On the afternoon of the Queen's Birthday the defendants went to the shop of Mr. F. W. Allen, butcher, High-street, St. Kilda saying they were going to have a lark, and refused to leave. They were, however, ejected. During the struggle MORAN struck Mr. Allen a blow in the face, but the latter obtained an old baton, with which he belaboured them. They then attempted to pull the shutters down, made use of disgusting language, and threatened to break the windows. William Glover, who was at Mr. Allen's, went to the police station for assistance, and the defendants made off. Upon the matter being reported to Sergeant Holmes, he went to the locality . He subsequently saw Campbell, who begged to be let off and he cautioned him twice. He afterwards observed MORAN, who was insulting passerby. He asked MORAN what he was doing, upon which he made use of the most disgusting language, which was repeated. The sergeant then attempted to arrest the man, who struck and kicked him. The sergeant, however, threw him down, whereupon he promised to go to the police station quietly, but no sooner was he allowed to regain his feet than he struck the sergeant a severe blow in the face, and was again thrown. They were struggling together, MORAN kicking and fighting, when Constable Andrews came up and saw them in the water channel at the corner of High and Vale streets. The constable put the handcuffs on the prisoner after a short tussle. MORAN refused to walk to the police station, tried to break the handcuffs, assaulted Constable Andrews, tearing his uniform, and attempted to escape. He however, was secured. A number of witnesses, amongst whom were Messrs. Glover, Humphreys Churchus, and Braden gave evidance, and clearly proved that the prisoners had committed the offeneces with which they were charged. Sergeant Parkinson stated that MORAN, Manning, and Camp- bell had been convicted andl fined at Prahran for brutally assaulting a Chinaman. The prisoners made the excuse that they were drunk on the afternoon in question. The bench fined MORAN £10, or three months' imprisonment, with hard labor, for insulting behaviour ; for assaulting Sergeant Holmes he was sentenced to three months hard labour; for assaulting Constable Andrews, three months; for insulting behaviour towards Mr. Allen he was fined £10, or' three months, and for using obscene language, £10, or three months, the sentences to be cumulative. Manning and Campbell were each fined £10, or three months' imprisonment,, for insulting behaviour, and William Dodds, who had not been previously convicted, 40s, or 14 days'
   
• 15 June 1887 - John Moran of Nelson street, Balaclava, reported to the St. Kilda police that his daughter, Emily MORAN, aged 11 years, went away with a girl of the same age named M'Connell on Friday afternoon last, and had not since returned They were seen in the Eastern Market on Saturday evening She is of fair complexion and hair, and was dressed in a blue gown with white spots, lace up leather boots
   
• 30 Jul 1887 - Before the Prahran court on Monday week a lively damsel named Eva McConnell, aged about 13, pleaded guilty to stealing a table cloth and other articles valued at 15s. Elizabeth Blanche Plant stated that the prisoner had been in her service for about a week, and left without notice. After she had gone, witness missed some of -her property. The prisoner was also- charged with stealing a lady's silk jacket, the property of John Drysdale, of Caroline street. She went to the prosecutor's house to see a girl named Emily Moran, who was in service there, representing that she was her sister. After she had left the house the jacket was missed, and she was wearing it when arrested for stealing goods belong ing to Mrs Plant. Emily Moran, who stated that she gave the jacket to the prisoner, was then charged with larceny. It was stated that the girl McConnell was in the habit of being out at all hours of the night, and was a "curse to St. Kilda'" where she had been living. Her mother, however, promised to look after her in future, and she was discharged, as was also the other prisoner.
   
• 22 Feb 1888 - A VIOLENT ASSAULT.
  At the St Kilda Police Court on Tuesday, John MORAN was charged with violently assaulting Richard Leishman on the Stb. hist., in Alford street, St Kilda There was also a cross summons charging Leishman with assault. Mr Reynolds appeared for Leishman, and Mr Daly for Moran A. witness named William Wardrop stated that on the evening of the day named Leishnman and he were walking towards their homes, when they noticed Moran engaged with a number of boys, and heard them threaten to " screw their-necks.' Leishman, noticing one of the boys amongst the number, ordered him to run away home, and then MORAN, without further provocation, struck Leishman a violent blow in the face After a short struggle on the ground, Leishman rose and was leaning against the fence, wiping blood from his face, when MORAN struck him again. In cross- examination, witness admitted having formerly worked for MORAN, and had a dis agreement with him. He heard MORAN say to Leishman, ' I'll have my knife in you," meaning that he would be revenged upon him. Mr Daly argued that it was not likely that his client a respectable man and a, colonist of 35 years, would have committed an assault of the nature described without gross provocation The parties were neighbours in Nelson street and there had for a long time been ill feeling between them. The defendant, John MORAN, stated that he, together with his family, were sitttng down to tea on the evening in question, when they were startled by a shower of stones falling on the roof. Rushing out, he saw four boys, one of whom was a son of Leishman, in the act of throwing stones His son, William MORAN, pursued and caught one of the boys, and witness was about to remonstrate with young Leishman, when the father came up, and, defying him to touch the boy, put him self in a fighting attitude and struck the first blow, which hit witness on the arm. In his defence he (MORAN) then knocked Leishman down, and in struggling on the ground the latter pulled out a hand- ful of MORAN's beard. The son, William MORAN, gave somewhat corrobora- tive evidence, but the mayor said that the Bench did not believe that he had seen the assault. The magistrate decided that the evidence of the witness Wardrop might be relied on, and fined Moran in the sum 40s , with 20s costs. The cross summons was dismissed It should be stated that the witness MORAN informed the Bench that during the stone throwing one of his daughters had been hit with a stone, and that she was so ill that he had requested the police to have her dying depositions taken.
   
• 18 Mar 1889 - CHARGE OF ARSON.
  On the 19th ult, a boy named Alexander MORAN, residing at Balaclava, was brought before the St Kilda Bench, charged with having caused one of the many fires which occurred at about that time in that borough
  He was defended by Mr. D Gaunson, who, after a lengthy hearing, discharged. The case was reported to the Crown law officer; who, not being satisfied with the decision at the magistrates in dismissing the case, have filed a presentment for a trial at the present criminal sittings of the Supreme Court. The boy was re arrested and brought before ?? St. Kilda Court on Saturday, when he was remanded to Melbourne.
  1 May 1889- Alexander MORAN, a boy 11 years of age, pleaded guilty to setting fire to a shed at St Kilda, and his father, who was in court, stated that the boy had not had any intention of doing injury, but had set fire to grass near the shed as a boy's prank, and the shed then took fire His Honour stated that he did not think the boy had any criminal intention, and he would, therefore, allow him out at liberty on one surety of £100 for his good behaviour duning the next 12 months 'The prisoner's father became his surety,and he was then discharged.
   
• 4 May 1889 - PIGEON-STEALING BY LITTLE BOYS
  James Miller (seven), Arthur MORAN (nine), and Phillip Tachentacher (eight years of age), were brought before the mayor of St Kilda and Mr Ashley, IP, on Friday, charged with having on the night of the 13th ult. stolen six pigeons, valued at 2, the property of John M Cartney, of Alfred street, Bala- clava Evidence was given that the boys had planned and effected the robbery together, intending to sell the pigeons to a bird fancier, when they were observed in Crimea street by an elder brother of MORAN, who took the birds to the police station. It ap- peared that the boys sometimes slept out at night, and Senior constable Connell gave the boy MORAN a bad character Mr Barber, of the Gordon Institute, offered to take charge of the two elder boys, to which the parents and the Bench consented , Mr Barber ex- plaining that the boys would be sent to Ferndale farm where they would be trained in husbandry and other work suitable to their age, and, when opportunity offered, transferred to the care of farmers and others willing to receive them. Their schooling and proper discipline would be attended to and they would be removed from, the bad companionship of the streets. This course was agreed. The boy Miller was cautioned, and allowed to go home with his mother.
   
• 5 Jul 1907:-
  A WORTHLESS HUSBAND.
  MUST SUPPORT HIS CHILDREN.
  Arthur E. Moran, painter, was pro-ceeded against at the St. Kilda Court this morning, before Messrs Stedefand and Morrah, J's P. by his wife Alice Moran, residing at Duke Place, St. Kilda, on a charge of having left his wife and two children without adequate means of support. Mr W. E. Brunt appeared for com-plainant, but defendant did not appear.
  Complainant deposed that she was married on the 14th January, 1901, by the Rev. J. G. Evans. Her husband had not supported her from the begin-ning, and had never given her a penny. He followed up racing, and was ad-dicted to drink and gambling. She earned her own living by going out washing. Her husband came home periodically and Intimidated her. He had not been working at his trade for some time, as he preferred race meet-ings. Last Sunday he came home and knocked her about. He then took the blankets off the children's bed and went away. She fancied he had gone permanently. Her eldest child was 5 1/2 years, and the other two years.
  The bench made an order for pay-ment of 7s 6d a week for each child. Defendant was also ordered to find one surety of L25 for compliance with the order, In default, imprisonment til compiled with. Costs, L1 16s 6d, were allowed.
   
• 23 Oct 1909:-
  ST. KILDA POLICE COURT.
  Tuesday, October 19.

  ' LANGUAGE ' AT A DANCE.
  Arthur Moran, a young man, was charged with having used obscene language, Augustus Walker, of 18 Duke street, said that on the preceding (Monday) night, he was in charge of the Alma Hall, where a dance was proceeding under the management of the Duk Quadrille Club. Accused presented himself at the door in a drunken state, and demanded admit-tance: Witness ordered him awav, whereupon he pulled off his 'coat and wanted, to fight, using disgusting language meantime. It was between nine and ten o'clock, and females were within hearing.
  A sample of the language, written on a piece of paper was handed to accused. Accused : Are you not afraid of being struck dead for putting such words in against me?
  Harold Walker, a nephew of the previous witness gave similar, evi-.dence. ;
  Accused : It is a concoction between the old man and this young fellow.
  Charles Ford also gave evidence.
  Constable Stephens said that when he arrested accused the latter called Walker a mongrel. . Accused said he never used bad language, but admitted having called Walker ' an old mongrel.' The row arose through Walker, who was his landlord, raising his rent.'
  Charles R. Allsopp, M.C. at the dance, said no bad language reached the ears of those In the ballroom. A ' circular waltz ' was on at the time, and accused could not be heard. There was no bad language used any how.
  Accused had a very bad record and the bench said they were letting him down lightly in fining him 40s., or fourteen days.
   
• 6 Jan 1915:- Police Gazette
  Moran, Arthur Edward Augustus, is charged on warrant, with deserting his wife Alice Moran, 62 Brunnings St, Balaclava, at Balaclava, on the 5th inst. Description :- A painter, 35 years of age, 5 feet eight inches high, medium build, fair complexion, fair hair, clean shaven, nose has been broken and very prominent; generally wears a light-grey suit and a blue felt or boxer hat.
   
• 14 Jan 1920:- LOYALIST WHARF-WORKER'S Complaint:-
  Before Messrs. Willis and Alford, J.P.'s at the St. Kilda Court yesterday, Ellen Jane ARROWSMITH, of 249 Inkerman Street, charged her husband, Thomas W. Arrowsmith,.with having left her and their four children without adequate means of support.
  Defendant who was evidently suffering from ill-health said he had been in hospital. He had been kicked while working on the wharves as a loyalist, and at present his health was such that he could not do any work. The Bench adjourned the case for a week to give Arrowsmith an opportunity to obtain a medical cer-tificate to verify his statement as being unfit for work. The Bench advised the wife meanwhile to obtain assistance for herself and children from the local Ladies Benevolent Society.
   
• 21 Jul 1924:-
  -At the corner of Charles and High streets, Prahran, about 2 o'clock on Saturday after- noon, Arthur MORAN, of Packington street, St. Kilda, was knocked down by a motor lorry driven by Raymond Pearson, of Lord street, Richmond. Pearson is employed by Mr. Mcllody. Moran was taken to the Alfred Hospital by Constable North and admitted, suffering from concussion and abrasions.
   
• 21st Feb 1938:- Struck by Tram
  Struck by a tram at the corner of Dandenong road and Williams road St Kilda, last night, Ellen ARROWSMITH, aged 65 years, of Banole avenue. East Prahran, was taken in an ambulance to the Alfred Hospital She was admitted with con- cussion, shock, and abrasions. (Ellen died 3 days later)
