• THE RAILWAY STRIKE
  The Age 11th May, 1903. Monday
  ...One of the other regulars is a well-known driver, who was made the butt of many gibes and threats by some of the strikers and their sympathizers, but who is evidently not the stuff, judging by his appearance and demeanor, to be intimidated by anything of that sort. He drove his engine throughout the day.
   
• The Age 12th May, 1903. Tuesday
  One man stands out as a hero in the strife. He is the only member of the regular staff who has stuck to his post of duty on his engine, and would not be induced to forsake tha Government in the crisis. Fears were entertained that he would be a marked man, and that his house would be damaged. Consequently the police were instructed to keep a sharp lookout, and every precaution was taken to protect him and his property. Late on Sunday night, however, during the temporary absense of police, his residence was bombarded with stones, and nearly all tha windows were broken. Fortunately no-one was injured by the attack. Some of the driver's comrades had been down to see him before the attack was made, but they were not suspected. Their errand was to get him to relinquish his post, and they used all sorts of arguments with that object, but without avail. To their assertions that the government was beaten, and that he would be the only man on the footplate next day, he said "Even so, I'll stick to my duty. I have got very good employers. They have always treated me fairly, and I'll not desert them."
  In the immediate vicinity of the sheds all was quietness. Those having business there were allowed to enter and depart unmolested, but no person was allowed in unless he had a pass. The house in Stawell-street used by the strikers as committee rooms was crowded with men, some of whom rushed across the street and boohooed as trains passed by , whilst others stood in the balcony and vented their feelings in a similar way.

  Intimidation & Assault
  Mr. John Harcombe, of No. 1 Stawell-street, North Melbourne, and his family, have been subjected to very cowardly treatment. Miss Harcombe on Monday stated to a representative of `The Herald' that her father came off duty at 7.00 p.m. on 'Saturday, after driving on the Williamstown line, and while on the engine he was several times pelted with stones. On Sunday afternoon the family got an intimation that they would have a "very lively time of it" before Monday's sun rose, and about 8.45 p.m. on the first named day a large crowd of boys and girls - with a mingling of adults - gathered in front of Harcombe's residence. They were singing lustily, "We'll hang old Harcombe from a sour apple tree", and subsequently showered road metal - which was lying loose in Stawell-street in large quantities - on the windows and walls of the driver's house. The erection is a two-storey one, and all the front upstairs and downstairs windows were smashed, and the cement chipped off the building in parts. The crowd numbered quite 100 persons. Mr. Harcombe was in the house at the time, but the crowd did not seem aware of it. He left for duty at 11.00 p.m. yesterday under police escort, and will be housed on the railway premises until the trouble is over. This morning he took the Ballarat train out.
