• Notes:
• Upon his first marriage, Samuel's occupation was given as 'weaver'. The date 13.5.1843 is in fact the date the booking for the marriage was made , there is a column after that saying date of marriage but no date is recorded there . This the same for all but one of the marriage bookings on this page
• The ' Blanche ' left Liverpool , Eng on the 4th of August 1852 and 104 days later arrived at Geelong , Victoria , At the time they embarked it was a very hot and sultry weekend and the heat continued until the Blanche had been towed out of the Mersey , when a heavy storm of rain and thunder brought some cool relief , cooling the air to a pleasant 65 degrees . Emigrants crowded " tweendecks and feeling the first pangs of sea-sicknes , would hardly have noticed the freshness following the storm
• According to the shipping log , Samuel Craig ( 29 year - old Light Porter born in Ayrshire , Scot. ) travelled with his wife , Elizabeth ( age 29 ) , his daughter Elizabeth ( age 7 ) , his son John ( age 4 ) , his son Hugh ( age 2 ) and his daughter Mary ( infant ) . He was to be employed by Mr. Samuel Hopkins , of Worombete , for 12 months , for a salary of 45 pounds plus rations
• "Worombete" property consisted of a homestead and about 20,000 acres of land situated about 4 miles south of Winchelsea . It is possible that Samuel worked as a ' splitter and fencer ' as the property was being fenced at that time and later when Samuel applied for a land selection he describes himself as above
• Samuel's first wife Elizabeth died in suspicious circumstances a little over a year after the family arrived in the colony. This was not long after the birth of their son Robert who died as an infant . Margaret ( noted as Mary in the ship's log ) also died very young
• Samuel's death cert. states he was a farmer . The informant was John Henry Atkins ( son-in-law ) . Samuel's first wife is given as Elizabeth Mitchell . It is noted he had three living ( Elizabeth , 46 ; John , 44 ; Hugh , 42 ) and two deceased children by her . It is further noted that Samuel had four living children ( Euphemia , 33 ; Anne , 29 ; Robert Wilson Dorby , 27 ; Martha , 25 ) and one deceased by Johanna Mahoney

• Elizabeth is named on the death cert of Samuel ( 1891 ) and on the marriage cert. of their daughter Elizabeth in 1868
• When Elizabeth Mitchell died , she left behind Elizabeth age 8 , John age 5 and Hugh age 3 , and possibly Margaret age 2. There was no offical death certificate for Elizabeth.

• Notes:
• Samuel married for the second time, in St. Mary's catholic church, Geelong , of which his new wife Johanna Mahoney ( spinster of Geelong ) , a native of Tipperary , Ireland was a member . This certificate notes that Samuel was widowed on the 28.12.1853 . Samuel was 33 years old and gave his occupation as a shepherd , who was living at Worombeit . Samuel gave his parents names as John Craig and Margaret Wilson , his father John, noted as a shop keeper . The witnesses to this marriage were Bridget Coher and Tho. Bamler . It is clearly noted on this certificate that Samuel has only three living children . No dead children are listed (and no record has yet been found for these three deaths). This marriage took place 17 months after Elizabeth died
• Samuel and Joanna had 5 children. The evidence contained on both of this couples death cert's correspond to this, except, the deceased child of Johanna and Samuel is given as a Margaret rather than Samuel on Johanna's death . Upon the birth of their son Robert (b. 1863), it was noted that their children were Euphemia (age 5), Annie (age 2) and 1 deceased
• In 1868 Samuel appears in the P.O directories as a farmer at Modewarre
• On the 6th of June 1870 , Samuel applied for a license to select 206 acres of land in the Parish of Gherang Gherang . An application was lodged for a lease by license on the 16.6.1873 . The amount of 64 pounds was paid for fees on this license . The list of improvements were costed at : 198 pounds in fencing ( post and three rail fence , 103 chains ; post and two rail fence , 38 chains ; post rail and log , 45 chains ) , 10 pounds for clearing and 10 pounds for the building ( a 2 room wooden cottage , 20 x 12 feet , no water storage ) . This land adjoined the Worombete property . At the time Samuel owned 6, 1/2 acres in the township of Modewarre which was the site of a wooden house

• Four years later he applied for the title of the land ( License No. 586 , under section 19 ) , that being Allotment 47B in the Parish of Gherang Gherang . It consisted of 206 acres 1 rood and 37 perches
• Mr. MacPherson reported to Mr. Monash 14.7.1873:
  " The condition of the residence has only been partly complied with , and none of the land has been cultivated , it being stated to be unfit for such purpose , but I've no reason to doubt the bona fides of licensee ."
• Samuel gave his occupation as ' splitter and fencer ' on this application . He was granted title on the land in Jan 1874 , upon the payment of the balance of 207 pounds & 11 shillings , he had paid 72 pounds & 9 shillings previously as rent for the lease
• On the rate notice for this property in 1880 , Samuel is listed as a farmer

• Shipping Intelligence in the Geelong Advertiser 23.11.1852 :
  Blanche , barque , 704 tons , W. White , Master , from Liverpool , 104 days out , with 327 government immigrants . Passengers - Dr. and Mrs. Storey . Thorne , Sparks & Co. agents
  The Blanche also carried with her a cargo of 220 tons of coal . During the voyage there were nine deaths , most being children under 7 years of age . The emigrants placed a memorial to Captain White in the " Geelong Advertiser " on arrival , praising his behaviour towards them and their confidence in his seamanship

  Supposed Murder at Wormbete
  A shepherd in the employ of Mr Hopkins, of the name Samuel Craig gave information at the Police Office yesterday morning, that his wife Elizabeth Craig, taking with her an infant about three weeks old, left his tent on the 25th(?) December, for the purpose of visiting her sister, who was residing at Mr George Armytage's Station, on the Barwon. She states that she and the child arrived safe, and left on the 26th in good health; that when she got within two or three miles of Mr Hopkins Station she went into a hut kept by one Joseph Sutton, another shepherd in Mr Hopkins employ. Craig heard nothing of his family until his sister came to tell the overseer, that his wife was in a dying state and his child already dead. This was on Thursday 29th of December, and Craig lost no time in visiting the spot, when he arrived at Sutton's hut he found the door closed and the chain lodging(?) on the Iron ???ple outside, and upon entering found his wife lying on the bed a corpse, and no sign whatever of the child, or of the owner of the hut Joseph Sutton. Craig went home to get a coffin, and on Friday returned to Sutton's hut with the coffin, and upon further search being made inside the room, the remains of the child was found "In a state of putrification" tied up in a red cotton handkerchief, and placed under one end of the bed-stead. The two corpses were interred in the burying ground contiguous with Mr Thomas Austin's Station, without any inquest or inquiry into the circumstances of their decease, although from the statement of Mr Craig. one or two respectable person, who knew better, were present and cognizant of the fact, as above narrated.
   
• 18 Aug 1875: -
  EXTENSIVE SHEEP-STEALING.
  At the Geelong Police Court yesterday two men named Thomas Erwin and John Taylor were charged with stealing 11 sheep and 5 sheepskins the property of Samuel Craig of Gherang Gherang
  The prosecutor stated that he was a sheep farmer and had missed 291 sheep within the last six months and had not sold any The prisoners were neighbours and lived to gether, the paddocks being divided by a road On the 10th inst Sergeant Toohey and Taylor came to his house and they all went to Erwins where there were some sheepskins in front of the house five of which he found were his from being pjreviously marked with lamp black He then went to Ervin's paddock, and saw a dozen sheep there and noticed one with an ear cut off and the blood trickling down. It was branded with one of his brands SC, and a freshly marked E was on the rump. He at once yarded them. He then planted himself behind a tree and noticed Constable Kirwan and Ervin driving a flock of 800 or 900 sheep from Taylors paddock. As they came up a man named Hammond was bnuging up another flock. As the flocks came up he rounded up some stray ones. At this time Sergeant Toohey, Constable Kirwan, Hammond and the prisoner (Erwin) were m the yard. Toohey asked Erwin if the sheep were all his and he replied that all with the mark E were. Another sheep was caught with witness's brand on with ears cut besides two others which had been seared with a hot iron Sergeant Toohey asked him if the sheep belonged to him. He said he reared them and branded them 14 days ago. These sheep were outside the court. When the sergeant pointed out witnesses brand on the sheep, he did not say anything, The prisoner Erwin said there were only 11 without his brand. The sergeant then sent for Taylor and asked him if he knew about the three sheep. He said they were Erwin's when noticing the brand E but on turning them over he made no reply but admitted having ear marked them all Sergeant Toohey then arreeted both prisoners
  In cross examination by Mr Lees for the prisoners, the witness admitted that his sheep and Erwin s sometimes got mixed and as far as he knew the prisoners were respect- able men. He had never interfered with Erwin's ear mark Erwin at one time threatened to take his life and at another time the sheep were worried through him.
  Mr Thomas Hammond gave corro borative evidence respecting the finding of the three sheep branded S C on near side and E on rump, off ear cut off and seared. He identified the sheep outside as those found then Constable Haggard also gave similar evidence
  Mr Lees submitted that there was no evidence to substantiate the charge, as Craig branded his sheep indiscriminately, and a mistake had been made
  The Bench discharged Taylor and com nitted Erwin to take his trial.
  (Three cases followed this one on the same day all regarding the theft of sheep by Erwin from 3 other properties)
