• Notes:
• Hugh Craig was born around 1850 , in Paisley , Renfrew , Scotland. On his marriage certificate , he gives his father's name as Samuel Craig , a farmer . His mother's name is just listed as unknown, not surprising as she was murdered when he was only 3 years old
• Two year old Hugh was brought Australia by his parents, Samuel Craig and Elizabeth Mitchell in 1852 . Elizabeth died in Dec 1853, supposedly murdered during a trip to see her sister.
• Hugh spent his early years growing up on the Worombete sheep station, near Dean's Marsh, Victoria where his father was employed. Hugh went on to settle in the nearby Warrack area.
• Upon their marriage Hugh was 33 and Sarah was 23 both of Warrack, Sarah's occupation was noted as ' Lady '.
• Hugh was a farmer when he married in 1883 and in 1885 when Lavinia was born, though he also listed himself as a carpenter on land documents in this same year. In 1904 , he is listed as a labourer in both the Echuca rates book and on Lavinia's marriage cert
• Selected 319 acres of land in 1874, Parish of Warrack. Fell into arrears with the rent in 1878 and 1879. Reselected the land in 1880 under a different land act but again had rent troubles in 1885.
• Sometime between 1886 and 1892 he moved to Crowlands but by 1904, the family had relocated to Hovell St , Echuca East. Hugh and Sarah were still living in this house when Hugh died, in 1921
• Hugh was purported to be a very grumpy and mean spirited old man, who Sarah had to keep a careful eye on when the grandchildren were around, because he was known to give them a "whack" for no reason when no-one was looking
• Sarah Jane Vernon was the second of six children , born to Francis Vernon and Mary McLoughlan ( not Mary McMahon as it says on the above marriage certificate ).
• Originally from Sandhurst, Sarah's family moved to Landsborough , Victoria in around 1862
• In 1865 Sarah's mother died in childbirth . Sarah was only 7 when this happened . Her father did not remarry , so between Sarah and her 8 year old sister Annie , they must of taken care of the home duties from a very young age. Including looking after their 5 year old brother
• I have been told that Sarah went into service at 12 years old , with a family in the Navarre area and that up until this time she had no education . The father of this family was an astrologer and in addition to having Sarah educated with his own children , he also taught them all about the stars and would allow them to view the sky through his telescope
• After the death of her husband, Sarah lived with the Dreghorn family in Hovell St. , Echuca. She took care of the newborn Valma when her mother, Cordelia, became very ill after her birth . After Lavinia told her sister Delia that a house was available across the road from her in Esssendon, they all moved down there.

• One of numerous letters contained in Hugh Craig's land selection file:
  Ararat 6th January 1885
  Sir
  I have the honor to ??? under ga?? ??dice the following case. On the first day of December 1874 a License under Section 19 & the Land Act 1869 was issued to Hugh Craig to occupy 319a 2. 0. in the Parish of Mount Cole.
  He duly obtained the Certificate of the Board and thereupon a Lease was issued to him.. Owing to adverse circumstances he was unable to pay his rent and the Lease was forfeited. Being an ignorant man he was not aware that could Mortgage his Lease or bring same under the Act of 1878 - On the first July 1880 he reselected the land under Section 19 as amended by the Act of 1878 and has made all the required improvements. He now wishes to have his License brought under Section 19. I have the honor to request that you will be good enough to inform me whether on payment of arrears of rent the License can be transferred to Section 19 in order that Mr Craig may be in a position to apply for a Lease.
  If this can be effected it will be a great boon to Mr Craig who through ignorance has forfeited over one hundred pounds rents paid under previous Lease and License.
