• Notes:
• Hans Paul Sandow was the first son of German immigrants , Paul Karl Sandow and Julia Sophie Louise (Augusta ) Ohrt, though he was Paul's second child and Julia's third !
• Hans grew up in and around Echuca , eventually gaining employment, with the Victorian Railways . Where he was employed as a railway ganger
• On the 13.4.1904, at the age of 27, Hans Paul married Lavinia May Craig. She was 18 years of age and living in Echuca. They married by license.
• Hans was living in Crowlands , when he married . This was Lavinia's birthplace . It's no great mystery why they married , their first child was born on the 11.2.1904 , two months before her parents marriage.
• Lavina was known as just 'May'
• Sometime after her husband's death May left her house in Napier St., Essendon and went to look after her deceased sister's (Cordelia) husband John Dreghorn at his house
• Sometime before hand May's mother Sarah, had taken in the butcher's boy, Joe Briggs, as she scathingly believed his parents were drunkards and unfit to be parents. Joe was about 12 at the time, he became something of a family legacy. Living with the Dreghorn family, after Sarah Jane's death and after John Dreghorn died, May continued to look after Joe until he became terminally ill and had to be placed in a home
• At the time of her death Lavinia was living with her sisters Sylvie and Ida in Rowans Rd, Moorabin

   • It seems that there was something wrong with Verna from birth. Nobody believed that she would live , she is said to have just laid in her crib doing nothing , not moving or responding to anything

• 5 June 1895:- Sunday Footballers
  Five youths' named John Leaek, Hans Sandow, Alfred Cheers, Wm. Lahey, and Bright Anderson were charged with playing football in a public place on Sunday, the 26th May last, to the annoyance of the public. The defendants each pleaded guilty, and after hearing the evidence of Constable Turner the bench discharged the lads with a caution.
   
• 5 Jul 1911:-
  NEW INSOLVENTS.
  Hans Paul Sandow, of Green street, Richmond, railway employee Cause of insolvency Pressure of Creditors, low wages high cost of living and having to maintain a large family. Liabilities, £88 5 6; assets, 3 6 deficiency, £88 Mr J. N. M. Wood, assignee.
  
   
• 27.6.1924:- Murchison newspaper: a farewell function for Hans and Lavinia :
   
  ' Mr. P. Sandow , who has filled the position of ganger for the East-Rushworth railway line for the past eight years , received of his transfer to Essendon . Mr. Sandow , who was held in high esteem by his fellow employee's , was tendered a farewell by them at Murchison East , and presented with a case of gold mounted pipes . Mrs. Sandow , who has occupied the position of station mistress at Murchison during that period , is also taking her departure . In carrying out her duties in charge of the railway station Mrs. Sandow had gained many friends as she attended to her business well and was always friendly and obliging and her successor will find it a hard matter to carry out the work so well . In addition to her work at the station , as well as the care of her home , Mrs. Sandow was always to the front in any matter of general welfare of the town , and she gave her assistance to everything of a social nature . Mr. and Mrs. Sandow will be greatly missed in the town , especially in the annual effort for the Mooroopna Hospital , when they did their part willingly and assisted the movement greatly.
    On Monday evening , notwithstanding the short notice , a farewell social was held in the Murchison Mechanic's Institute , where a large assemblage was present. Cr. Jno. Cloney and Mr. C. Shepard spoke eulogistically of the guests of the evening and wished Mr. and Mrs. Sandow and family health and success in their new home. Mrs. Sandow was presented with an order to purchase some token of esteem in which she was held as time did not permit of donors doing so. Dancing was continued until 12 o'clock. Mr. A Salas presiding at the piano , and Mr. Jas. Kenny carrying out the duties of M.C.'
   
• Murchison paper dated 8.12.1922:-
    'The friends and family of Mrs. P . Sandow , the popular station mistress at Murchison railway station will regret to learn that on Wednesday she received an urgent message to journey to Echuca , where her relatives live reside , as a sister was seriously ill and her condition was such that much anxiety was felt as to her recovery.'
    (The relative being spoken about was May's sister Cordelia Dreghorn, who's childbirth had been badly botched by a drunken matron)
   
• 27 Jul 1927:- The Insolvency Acts
  - In the court of Insolvency Central District, at Melbourne - In the Matter of the Estate of HANS PAUL SANDOW of 72 Green street, Richmond, Railway Employe, as Insolvent - A First and Final DIVIDEND is intended to be Declared in the matter of the abovenamed, whose estate was sequestrated on the 3rd day of July, 1911. Creditors who have not proved their debts by Monday, 15th day of August. 1927, will be excluded from this dividend.
