  Boy Drowned At Brunswick: Inquest On The Victim;
  Dangerous Clay Holes Dr. R. H. Cole, P.M., District Coroner, held an inquest at the True Briton Hotel, Ewing-street,Brunswick, on Tuesday afternoon, touching on the death of Bertie Roberts, a child 6 years old, who was drowned in the clay hole in Barkly-street on Monday afternoon. Wm Roberts, a tramway employee, of 86 Barkly-street, deposed that the deceased was his brother, and was 6 1/2 years old. His mother was a widow, with six other children, three of whom were boys and three girls. Bertie, who was deaf and dumb, was the youngest. Witness had previously given his brother a beating for playing near the clay hole. Witness thought the clay hole, which was fenced with a picket fence, should have better protection. Geo. Harry Crooks, an intelligent lad of six years of age who had never heard of the Bible, stated that he lived in Barkly-street. He was playing with deceased on Monday afternoon. They descended the clay hole near the fence where the steps were, to the edge of the water. There was a little hill, and the witness was over there, not near the edge of the water, with Sydney Bloxsome and Alf Roberts. Bertie Roberts stepped on a piece of dirt, but witness did not see him fall in, although he saw him in the water. Witness tried to get Bertie out, and caught hold of his hand. The reason he let go was because a man on top of the hill shouted out `Hold on, Sonny', which frightened witness and caused him to let go. Witness went away and got a stick, and Bertie caught hold of it, and witness tried to hold him until the man could get there, but the stick broke and Bertie sank. Another man dived for the body, but could not find the deceased. Rakes were then fetched, and by this means the body was recovered. It was the first time he had been to the big hole with Bertie, although witness had been scolded for going to the hole before. Sydney Bloxsome, 7 years of age, living in Barkly-street, who had also never heard of the Bible, stated that he saw the deceased in the water. the reason witness went to the clay hole was because Crooks asked him to bring his dog to swim. Cross-examined by a juror, witness said that the boys frequently played at the clay hole. Ernest Francis, six years of age, deposed that witness was on a little hill, sitting down near the edge of the water, and witness saw him slip. He ran away and told Mr. Warren, of Barkly-street, who came at once. Cross-examined by a juror - Witness got through the broken fence. Constable Ernest Naylor Watson, of Brunswick, deposed that from information received he went at about 5,30p.m. on Monday to the clay hole known as Barningham's clay hole. When witness got there some men were just taking the deceased dody out of the water. The body was carried to the bank, and witness tried for some time to restore animation, but without success; and from enquiries he made he ascertained that the body must have been in the water for fully an hour. The spot where the body was recovered near the little hill. Witness noticed that the fence along Barkly-street was in bad repair. The distance from the fence down the steep bank to the water was about 50 yards. Cross-examined by a juror - Witness did not see any notices posted there. Dr. Cole, in summing up, said it appeared that the children were playing and that one who was away from the others fell in the water. The question of fencing in these holes was a matter that the court had scarcely to deal with. If it were anyone's duty, it would be that of the municipalities, who might take notice of the occurrence and call upon the owner to fence in the property. The jury, of course, could add a rider to their verdict. The jury found that the deceased, Bertie Roberts, was accidently drowned in a clay hole on the 19th inst., and added the following rider:- `We think that this clay hole being dangerous should be more efficiently fenced off.'
   
Drowned in a Tank.

• 17 Aug 1880:-
  On Thursday afternoon, August 12, it was reported to the police that a little girl named Emma Roberts had fallen into a tank on Moonta Mines, and was drowned. Due enquires having been made it was thought advisable to hold
  AN INQUEST
  On the body, and this was accordingly done on Friday, at the House of Mr. W. Pryor,. before Mr. G. F. Wyatt J.P., and the following jury John Hattams, William Andrews, William John Andrews, Willian Gummow, William Howe, John Jones, James Keam, Isaac James, William Symons, John Henry Polglase, James N. Thomas, and James Bule foreman-
  William Roberts deposed that deceased was his daughter and was two years and six months old. On the previous day about one o'clock deceased and four other children went into the yard to play. She afterwards came back, and shortly left again. , Did not see her for half an hour afterwards when she was discovered in the tank. Her eldest sister came in and asked for deceased, and witness said he thought she was out with her. She said Emma is not in the yard. Witness with his wife went out to see where she was and saw her hat floating on the water. Then took a long stick and felt around the tank. Felt the body and brought it to the surface of the water with a stack. Then jumped into the tank and handed the body up to his wife. Took deceased inside and went for the doctor. .Returned with Doctor Archer in from twenty minutes to half an hour. By the Coroner-- Had spoken to deceased about going to the tank and she was very fearful of going near it. No children had ever fallen into the tank before, Had been spoken to about the dangerous state of the tank, but had not had any water in it until recently. By a Jury man- When l was spoken to about the tank there was only a small amount of water in it. When it rains the tank fills and then it leaks, going down to about eighteen inches or two feet. The - tank is about three feet deep. I had not the-means to make the tank secure. I might have put sticks around it as a guard.' Lavinia Roberts, deposed that she was the mother of deceased. at about one o'clock on Thursday, deceased went out to play with some other chldren. She came in and took something off the end of the table and went out again. Sometime afterwards her eldest sister came in to look for her, and on being told that she was not in she said " Oh Emma's hat is in the tank." Got a pole and witness husband felt about the tank and after bringing the.body to the surface he jumped in the tank and handed the body to witness, who took it and rolled it, There were neighbors about and they took the child in the house, rolled her, put herein, a warm bath, rubbed her with brandy and put hot bottles of water to her, bowels. Doctor Archer then came. By the Coroner' the child appeared to be dead when she was taken out of the water. Did not hear any screams. By the foreman The tank does not hold water in the summer. After the rains the tank gets full, and then in a day or two the water shrinks down, to about eighteen inches. The tank is about three feet deep. By a Juror My screams brought the neighbors to the tank.
  Alice Roberts, sister of deceased, about eight years old, stated that just after dinner on Thursday they went out to play with some other children. Her sister Emma went into the house. Did not see her come out as witness with the other children were playing in the corner. Afterwards saw Emma's hat in the tank, and went in and told her mother, and both - mother and father went to the tank and got the body out.
  Eliza Rule, living opposite Roberts, deposed to having seen Mr. Roberts take deceased out of the tank. Mrs. Goldsworthy was looking for her little boy, and she said she thought a child must be in the tank. Went at once and looked through the fence, and saw Mr. Roberts lift deceased out of the tank. Witness stripped the child, after it was taken into the house, and with the help of others did all that could be done to restore life. There were no symptoms of re-turning life, It was the general opinion that the child was dead on its being taken out. By a juror went to Roberts immediately on Mrs. Goldsworthy reporting that she saw a hat on the top of the water, and was just in time to see Roberts lift the body out. Dr.-Archer deposed that about 1 o'clock on the previous day the father of deceased came to witness and.said his child had fallen in a tank. Went as soon as possible, and found the body wrapped in a blanket and lying on a sofa in the back room. There, were no signs of life. For a short time tried the ordinary method of restoring suspended animation without effect. The body had the appearance of death from suffocation,by drowning.
  The Coroner here called in the father of the child, and reprimanded him for not taking ordinary precautions for the purpose of keeping children out of the tank. He pointed out that the tank was in such a state, being open at each end, that other children who might come into the yard might have fallen in, and then he would have been severely censured. It would not have taken much trouble or expense to have made the place safe, and he hoped something would be done as soon as possible to make the tank secure. If it would not hold water it might as well be filled up, for even as a pit, in the yard, it was dangerous for young children.
  The jury then consulted together for a short time, and returned the following verdict That the deceased, Emma Roberts was found drowned." To this they attached the following rider. "If the parents had properly enclosed the tank the accident could not have happened.
