• Notes:
• At the age of 25, Hans was employed as a swimming master ( Badenmeister ). Hans worked in the Seebadenstalt ( Sea Baths , usually heated ) , in Kiel, Germany . The Valentiner's privately owned and ran the Seebadenstalt from 1850 - 1856 . It would apppear that Hans stopped working at the baths when the Valentiner's died and the baths were sold and turned it into a dance hall!


• At the time of his marriage, Hans lived in a part of the city of Kiel called Dusternbrook

• When Hans christened his last child born in Germany , he is listed as a Gastwirt ( Publican ) and not a Badenmeister ( Swimming attendant ) . When he boarded the ship for Australia , three months after this last christening , he was listed as an 'Arbeitsmann' ( a worker or labourer )

 
• Hans and Charlotte emigrated to Australia , with seven of their nine children (neither Friedrich Joachim Julius nor Friedrich Joachim Christian emigrated with their parents), in May 1863 . They were possibly fleeing from the upcoming Danish war , which had just broken out . This is understandable , as they would have already been through the German uprising of 1848 , which lasted three years.

   • Notes:
     This family hid from me for years. After Dorothea or "Dora" married her husband Ferdinand THOMAS, in 1875, they had just the one child, Gertrude, in 1877, then they seemed to disappear
     I looked all over Australia for them, assuming in the end that they may have returned to Germany. On her mother's death in 1910, Dora is listed as alive.
     Information eventually came to light that in 1881, Dora's husband Ferdinand, is living in Westbury on Trym, Gloucestershire, England with a woman he is calling his wife, a Ruth E THOMAS. Long story short, Ruth E. THOMAS, was in fact Ruth E STEEL, who not only worked with Ferdinand and Dora back in Ballarat but had signed as a witness at Ferdinand and Dora's marriage. While Ferdinand and Ruth were claiming to be man and wife in 1881, they did not in fact marry until 1886.
       But where was Dora?! The 1891 census shows her living in St Pancras, London, England, just a few streets from her ex-husband, under the surname Koch (I have hunted for this marriage without success). Dora is running a boarding house, with her 14 year old daughter Gertrude and is claiming she is a widow. By 1901, Dora and her now married daughter (and her son-in-law) are living on the same street, as 1891, but at a different number and Dora is still running a boarding house but her daughter is now listing her occupation as "Actress".
     On the 7th of Dec 1903, Gertrude was granted a divorce from her husband Alec WEATHERLY, due to his "Adultery and cruelty towards her". Gertrude remarried in 1904 but had no issue from either marriage.

• Newspaper report in Brisbane "The Courier" , Monday 10 August 1863:
  "The German ship La Rochelle, 827 tons, arrived in Brisbane Roads on Friday, the 7th instant, after a very excellent run of 81 days from Hamburg, she having sailed from that place on the 17th of May last. She is under the command of Captain E. Junge, who, we may mention, was her master on her previous visit to this port. On this occasion she brings 444 German immigrants to our shores. They are under the medical charge of Dr. Geiger. On board this vessel, as on board the Alster, there has been but little sickness during the passage, and no contagious or infectious disease. There were six deaths, all of infants, who died of maladies incidental to childhood. Three of the deaths were from convulsions, two from atrophy, or wasting away, and one from consumption . There were no births. In the saloon there is only one passenger - Mrs. Amelie Dietrich. La Rochelle brings 40 rams, of the celebrated Negretti breed, consigned to Mr. Tam, of South Brisbane, and 2500 fire-bricks as ballast. Mr. T.C. Heussler is the Brisbane agent for both the Alster and the La Rochelle. Dr Hobbs, the health officer, visited and inspected the above vessels on Saturday last, and as he found all the passengers in a perfectly health state, he passed the ships with clean bills of health. The immigrants will therefore be brought up to town as soon as arrangements can be made for their conveyance to Brisbane. "
   
• Murchison Newspaper 26.8.1898:
  " The death rate at Murchison has been exceptionally during the past fortnight or three weeks , no less than seven interments taking place in the latter period . Among those who have passed away are some of the oldest residents of the district . The latest to join the gret majority was Mr. E . McCracken ( a familiar figure about Murchison for many years ) whose death took place on friday last . About 8 or 9 years ago his lungs gave him serious trouble , and to such a state of weakness was he reduced at that time that his recovery seemed almost a matter of impossibility . However , his great vitality pulled him through , and he was able after a time to follow his former occupation as a butcher's shopman , but he had received a great shaking , and when another attack of the old complaint came on two or three weeks ago it was seen that the end was not far off . He was of a cheery disposition and everyone had a kindly word to say of him . He was a great admirer of Shakespeare , and frequently gave recitations at local entertainments from the immortal bard's works . He had also taken part in Shakespearian plays in this and in other parts of the colony , and gave a very capable reading of the characters he essayed , his latest effort in this line being in an act of the Merchant of Venice , performed by a local dramatic club , Mr . McCracken appearing as Shylock . But to quote from his favorite author , " Men must endure their going hence , even as their coming hither , " and poor old Ned has reached the " Last scene of all , that ends this strange eventful history " as far as this world is concerned . The deceased , who was 66 years of age , married late in life and leaves a widow and two children ( a boy aged 14 , and a girl aged 12 ) to mourn their loss . The remains were interred in the Murchison cemetery on Sunday , the funeral being well attended . In the unaviodable absence of a clergyman Mr. M Twomey read the burial service of the Roman Catholic faith . Mr. Welfare carried out the funeral arrangements .
   
• There was another article , in an undated paper , about James McBean (husband of Charlotte) which read ;
  A very smart act was performed by Mr. James McBean , last Saturday , at the Murchison cricket ground . It appears that a horse attached to a gingerbeer cart , bolted from the ground , and the proprietor , who had just clambered in at the back , jumped out , preferring the risk of a broken leg to the probability of a graver catastrophe , but then he had a wooden leg , and knowing by experience that this was the one sure to be broken ,the odds were decidedly in his favour . Mr. McBean pursued on horseback , and skilfully keeping the runaway on the track , ultimately succeeded in securing the reins , and stopped the horse.
   
• Murchison Newspaper, Sep/Oct. 1910: "On Wednesday , 28th , the death occurred of one of Murchison's oldest and most respected residents in the person of Mrs. Charlotte Ohrt . The deceased who had been ailing for some considerable time , contracted a severe cold , and passed away as stated at a very ripe old age . The deceased was of a quiet and retiring disposition , and was much respected by all with whom she came in contact She leaves a family of six children to mourn their great loss , included amongst which are Mrs. McCracken (Murchison ) and Mrs. T . Daish and Mrs. Hoey ( Shepparton ) . The funeral took place on Thursday afternoon ( 29th ) , a large number of mourners showing their last respect to deceased by following her remains to the place of interment , the Murchison Cemetery . The Rev. J. R. Walker read the service at the grave , while the funeral arrangements were in the hands of Messrs. M'Gilton and Kenny."
   
• Murchison Newspaper 25.8.1939:
  ' The death occured early on Tuesday morning of Mrs. Charlotte McCracken , at the Bush Nursing Hospital in Murchison . In her 85th year. Mrs. McCracken, who was a native of Germany, came to Australia at an early age with her parents, about 75 years ago. Deceased was married twice, first husband being Mr. J. McBean. The late Mr. McCracken conducted a butchery business at Murchison some years ago and Mrs. McCracken carried on the shop for some time after her husband's death. Her ability as a nurse was known throughout the district. Many calls were made on her to help the sick. Mrs. McCracken could recall when only a little girl , being taken to a Corroborees of the black at the camp in the vicinity of the town. Her six children called Paul, Charlotte, Ernie, William, Linnie and Carrol are still living. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon to the Murchison Cemetery, where the Reverand Tehan conducted the burial service. Montuary arrangements are in the hands of Mr. J Kettle.'
   
• 9th May 1929;
  "It is with extreme regret, so soon after the loss of Mr. T. Daish, of Corio St., Shepparton, that we announce the death of his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Adeline Daish. Last Thursday evening the late Mrs. Daish, who had been staying for some time with her daughter, Mrs. A. Walsh, of Caulfield, seemed in her usual health and to appearance had a good many years still to live. The two ladies went into the city intending to patronise a picture show at the Capitol Theatre, Swanston St. They were just about to take their tickets when Mrs. Daish suddenly collapsed. She was carried into the lounge and five Collins street doctors, one after the other, were rung up, but they were all so busily engaged that none of them could come. Mrs. Daish was, therefore, removed with all possible speed to the homeopathic hospital, where an examination showed that life was extinct. The remains of the deceased were removed to Shepparton for interment in the same grave as the body of her late husband. Yesterday afternoon the cortege started from the residence in Corio St, which the late Mrs. Daish had left in full faith that she was to return as usual, there to console herself as best she might for the loss of her husband by the devotion of her children. The funeral was among the largest ever seen in Shepparton, testifying to the great respect in which the deceased lady was held and to the sorrow caused by her sudden death. The REv. G. Paul conducted a short service at the house, and also officated at the cemetery. The coffin-bearers were Messrs. William T., Frederick & Lindsay Daish (sons) and Joseph Walsh & S. Poustie, sons-in-law of the deceased. The pall-bearers were Messrs. M. Halpin, J. Harrington, W. Pryde, G. Dyer, M. Poustie & John Walsh. A large number of beautiful wreaths were sent by old neighbours & sorrowing friends. These floral tributes quite covered the top of the hearse, and were left upon the grave. The mortuary arrangements were in the hands of Messrs. Kittle Bros.
  The late Mrs. Daish, who was 70 years of age, was born in Kiel, Germany, her maiden name being Ohrt. She was brought to Victoria by her late parents when an infant four years of age, so was practically an Australian. She was married on the 21st August 1878 at Murchison, the ceremony being performed by the Rev. Swift, a veteran Presbyterian minister. ? ? after their marriage Mr. & Mrs. Daish came to Shepparton were she resided ever since, a period of 50 years, during which she saw the place develop from a primitive bush township to it's present dimensions. She was the mother of 5 sons and two daughters. The surviving sons are Messrs. William T., John, Frederick & Lindsay and the daughters are Celia (Mrs. S. Poustie) and Annie (Mrs. Joseph Walsh). Another son Roderick is deceased.
  The late Mrs. Daish was of a retiring disposition and took very little part in public affairs. She was noted for her kindly nature and willingness to support any ?? for the relief of fellow(?) creatures in distress. She found her life ? in her home being one of the ? of the domestic circle of whom the ? hears little or nothing ? whose devotion to duty as wife and mother rewarded with a love which many of the great ones of the earth may envy. In the home of Mr. J. Daish there are two enlarged photographs of his late father & mother, both striking likenesses, especially that of the late Mrs. Daish. It is certain that when the imediate descendants look upon that portrait it will recall many tender memories of the lady who regarded trouble as a trifling provided that it was conducive to the welfare of her family.
  We have been requested to state that nothing could exceeded the kindness of the members of the staff of the Capitol picture theatre on the sad occasion. They were all eager, not only to express sympathy, but to help in every possible way.
